Power BI external tools

  • April 7, 2026
  • •

When working with more complex reports, you can often hit limitations in Power BI. Certain advanced tasks can be cumbersome or restricted within the native environment. This is where external tools come into play—complementary applications that connect directly to your report and provide deeper control for developers.

In this post, I’ll introduce a few external tools that have repeatedly made my work easier.

External tools in Power BI are third-party applications and services that can be integrated into the Power BI workflow. These tools help improve reporting, data transformations, and overall analytical processes. By using them, users can extend Power BI’s functionality and integrate more advanced capabilities for more accurate data analysis.

These are serious productivity boosters, especially for larger, enterprise-level models.

Tabular Editor

Official site: https://tabulareditor.com/

Tutorial: https://tabulareditor.com/resources/click-through-demos

The purpose of Tabular Editor is to facilitate the management and editing of tabular models in Power BI. It allows users to easily manipulate metadata, enabling flexible development workflows.

Key features:

  • Scripting: Ability to create automated scripts for repetitive tasks
  • Usability: Intuitive interface for managing, editing, and creating calculated columns, measures, and hierarchies
  • Deployment options: Supports easy deployment and version control

Benefits:
Tabular Editor enables Power BI developers to use advanced modeling capabilities, resulting in more precise reports.

Best for:

  • Intermediate developers — comfortable with data models, measures, and hierarchies.
  • Advanced/enterprise developers — who need scripting, version control, and structured deployment workflows.

DAX Studio

Official Site: https://daxstudio.org/

Tutorial: https://daxstudio.org/docs/category/tutorials/

DAX Studio is an essential tool for working more deeply with DAX. It provides a dedicated interface for writing, executing, and testing DAX expressions.

Key features:

  • Query editor: Syntax highlighting and autocomplete for easier query writing
  • Performance analyzer: Provides insights into query performance, helping identify and optimize issues
  • Data visualization: Allows immediate inspection of query results

Benefits:
Using DAX Studio improves analytical and reporting processes by enabling complex query development and model performance optimization.

It’s particularly useful when:

  • a report is slow due to DAX queries
  • a measure evaluates slowly
  • you want to build and test more complex logic

Best for:

  • Intermediate developers — who already write DAX and want to understand performance.
  • Advanced developers — who analyze query plans, optimize slow measures, and test complex logic.

ALM Toolkit

Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0j6d3UAw9U

ALM Toolkit supports model comparison and deployment across different environments.

Key features:

  • Model comparison: Easily compare models and identify differences
  • Deployment management: Speeds up deployment of changes
  • Change tracking: Logs changes for auditing and troubleshooting

Benefits:
Helps teams working collaboratively ensure consistent model versions and reduce discrepancies. Especially useful when working across multiple environments (dev/test/prod) or in team-based development.

Best for:

  • Advanced developers — working with multiple environments (dev/test/prod).
  • Enterprise BI teams — who need controlled deployments, model comparison, and change tracking.

VertiPaq Analyzer

Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8M7TDiXfxU&list=PLU6II7MW-aiI5A2FjtlVx0yVm3AezOjYr

VertiPaq Analyzer is a powerful tool for understanding data modeling and memory optimization in Power BI.

Key features:

  • Performance analysis: Detailed insights into memory usage and query times
  • Model optimization: Guidance on improving model efficiency
  • Visualization: Clear structural overview using charts and diagrams

Benefits:
Provides deep visibility into model behavior, enabling more efficient data analysis. Recommended when working with large models or when refresh performance is slow.

Best for:

  • Intermediate developers — who want to understand model size and memory usage.
  • Advanced model architects — optimizing cardinality, compression, and refresh

Power BI Helper

Official site: https://powerbihelper.org/

Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuAjRI4J8gE

Power BI Helper is a documentation and model analysis tool that improves transparency in complex reports.

Key features:

  • Automatic documentation: Structured descriptions of reports and models
  • Dependency mapping: Visualizes relationships between measures and columns
  • Performance reports: Identifies potential bottlenecks

Benefits:
Particularly useful in enterprise environments where reports are maintained and handed over between multiple developers.

Best for:

  • Beginner to intermediate developers — who need help understanding dependencies and documenting reports.
  • Enterprise teams — where handovers, transparency, and documentation are critical.

Power BI development workflow

A development workflow can look like this:

  • Build the model in Power BI
  • Fine-tune with Tabular Editor
  • Optimize DAX with DAX Studio
  • Check model size with VertiPaq Analyzer
  • Document with Power BI Helper
  • Deploy using ALM Toolkit

This combination enables an enterprise-grade workflow.

Summary

Integrating external tools into Power BI not only enhances reporting and analytical capabilities but also significantly improves productivity. By incorporating these tools into their workflows, Power BI users can:

  • Accelerate data modeling: Make changes quickly and efficiently without compromising performance
  • Enhance analytical capabilities: Leverage advanced features for deeper insights
  • Improve collaboration: Ensure consistent models and shared understanding across teams

External tools become especially valuable when working with large models, in multi-developer environments, or when performance and maintainability are critical.
